SYNOPSIS : Steppe wetlands are the hotspots of maximum biodiversity in continental systems. The hundreds of hectares of cropland that surround them only serve to increase their ecological value, transforming them into islands of biodiversity in an ocean of farmland.
The central event in the ecology of these systems, their summer desiccation, is in fact the driving force behind an incredibly diverse network of biological relationships of a richness unparalleled elsewhere in Europe.
